5 WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR HOME OFFICE SPACE

Updated: Nov 20

2020 has been a year full of growth, changes, and adjustments. On the bright side, the one thing that has left me feeling optimistic is that with change & uncertainty, comes amazing opportunity! This year was one for the books - I left my corporate gig to start my own design firm ... which also happened to be in the middle of a pandemic. That transition (coupled with no longer having all of my typical office accommodations catered to) left me at home, in my makeshift office, trying to figure out how I could put all the pieces back together. Luckily, I have some pretty extensive experience designing office and workplace environments. With this knowledge, I was able to build my home office into a space that not only functioned ideally for my personal workflow, but one that looked pretty sharp too. With so many of us working safely from home, I wanted to share some of my favorite home office products that can help you transform your own home office space. So, here are 5 ways you can enhance your home office space - making it functional & efficient for your everyday use!

1. Invest in an Office Chair

Finding an amazing home office task chair is crucial. I work at my desk quite a bit, so finding a perfect seating solution that promotes body wellness was at the top of my list. Non- ergonomic chairs, that are not made thoughtfully to support the human body, can leave you with more aches and pains at the end of the day than when you started - no matter how pretty they may look. Finding a task chair that is supportive, adjustable to your bodies anthropometrics, and is aesthetically pleasing makes it so much easier to get through long weeks of zoom conference calls, desk work, and computer time. Below are a few of my favorite chairs that I have recommended to my clients, and one I purchased for myself!

Generation Chair by Knoll

The Generation Chair by Knoll leads the pack as my personal top pick for an ergonomically friendly, yet stylish, office chair. Available in a range of customizable colorways, this chair boasts "unparalleled flexibility". From it's frameless mesh flexible back with continuous lumbar support, to its flex seat with dynamic suspension capabilities, this chair takes the cake on its considerable ergonomic design. The arms are fully adjustable, as well as the pneumatic seat height adjustment, allowing for seamless up/ down flexibility. This office chair makes my list as the most well rounded and accommodating product on the market, so naturally, I selected this for my own home office environment. It's available direct to consumer at Design Within Reach, and would make an amazing contribution to any home office space!

Herman Miller Lino Chair

The Herman Miller Lino Chair is another great home office chair selection. The secret is in

their duo suspension frame and seat, implemented by a composite of thread tension technologies to provide total spinal support. This task chair is fully adjustable, and provides a breathable mesh back for comfort. Available in a range of custom colorways, this office chair does not fall short on options. Available direct to consumer at Design Within Reach, the graded in finish and textile selections provide beautiful, quiet aesthetic notes to accentuate an array of spaces.

Blu Dot Daily Task Chair

Looking to add a pop of color to your office? The Blu Dot Daily Task Chair is upholstered, and boasts a lighter, powder coated steel frame that comes in 3 color selections: red, green, and gray. The simplified design provides the essential ergonomic basics - adjustable height & tilt, as well as casters for mobility. The well - padded seat and back provide comfortability and support. Available direct to consumer, this upholstered chair will give you the support you need - and accentuate any space.

2. Provide Height Adjustability

In the last few years, there has been a rising trend in the use of height adjustable workstations as best practice for workplace wellness and body awareness. According to workdesign.com, "height adjustable workstations allow the user to work in a position that feels most comfortable for them, which in turn helps them be more creative and focused. Employees who alternate between sitting and standing positions typically have more energy, reduced fatigue, and are overall more productive throughout the day." Does your Apple watch ever send you a little reminder that it's time to stand? It's for a reason. Queue your height adjustable worksurface to get the job done! When selecting your ideal adjustable desktop solution, there are a few different options that may be considered. From desktop surfaces that actually rise and fall, to table top options that sit on your stationary desktop, there's a lot out there. Below are our favorites that make the cut.

Poppin Series L 2S Adjustable Height

Single Desk

The Poppin Series L 2S Adjustable Height Single Desk is an ideal selection for your home or office space. This desk has it all. It's stylish, it's functional, its code compliant, and it's amazingly affordable (which we all love). The height adjustable worksurface comes in a variety of widths and adjustable heights. The electronic keypad moves with the worksurface from ideal seated height, to standing height in a matter of seconds. The only ergonomic feature that this desk does not accommodate is screen lift/tilt adjustment. My solution would be to pair this desk with the Poppin White Swing Double Monitor Arms for a full range of adjustability.

Humanscale Quickstand

The Humanscale Quickstand height adjustable desktop unit is the "cream of the crop" in the height adjustable world. This fully loaded workstation raises the bar on height adjustability as we know it - receiving the "Best office accessory of the decade" award by Interior Design Magazine in 2015. This virtually weightless system, with plug and play cable management capability, transforms any stationary desk into a fully height adjustable solution - allowing for screen height and worksurface adjustment.

3. Plan Your Day

Are your email and computer notifications stressing you out? We've all been there. A desktop notification pops up and - surprise, you have a client meeting in 5 minutes. I personally believe in a good old fashion written planner, calendar, and dare I say - organized sticky notes, to balance career/life tasks and goals. Here's how you can keep it organized!

Moleskin Pro Project Planner

The Moleskin Pro Project Planner will get you through your day with ease. This hard cover "catch all" will ensure that you are able to execute every conference call, appointment, yoga class, and dinner date with confidence. The yearly, 4-monthly, monthly and weekly planning pages allow you to plan your year with ease (am I being overly ambitions here?). There is also a daily "notes" section to serve as a home for all of those sticky notes that currently live on your desk. The sleek and minimalistic design of the cover and interior pages provide a clean and professional look that make this life planner easy to take to the office, or to a casual meeting for coffee (socially distanced).

Poppin Dark Gray Fabric Pin Board

& Magnetic Dry Erase Board

The Poppin Dark Gray Fabric Pin Board and Magnetic Dry Erase Board make it simple for you to pin up and jot down notes that may come up during the course of your day. The minimalistic, sleek design ensures that these wall accessories will not distract. And, the simple aesthetic is sure to compliment multiple styles of office spaces.

4. Bring Nature Inside

Have you ever been outside in nature and immediately felt calm and serene? There is a reason that so many people feel calm when in the presence of natural elements. And that is only one of the reasons I am an avid lover of interior plantings. There are also extensive health benefits to bringing these friends into your indoor space. Indoor terrariums, rock & sand gardens, cacti, flowering plants, and other natural elements are perfect for your home office environment. We suggest bringing a few into your home office space and giving them a try!

5. Accessorize & Organize

Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. Balancing your workspace with timeless elements is a must in any home office. Here are a few of our favorite office accessories you can use to get the job done right.

Josef Albers: Homage to the Square: Blue +

Darkgreen with 2 Reds (from "Albers"), 1977

Adding color is an easy way to enhance your home office environment. Placing artwork in your home not only provides visual interest, but can help promote creativity, reduce stress, and increase ideation in the workplace. We love this print from Josef Albers: Homage to the Square: Blue + Darkgreen with 2 Reds (from "Albers"), 1977.

The Organized Desk: Concrete Desk Set

The Organized Desk: Concrete Set, created by award winning author Mari Kondo

(The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing), brings the right balance of Zen and style to your office desktop. Kondo believes deeply in "Joy at Work" making this Japanese inspired, concrete

organizational option a must!

Poppin White Stow 3-Drawer File Cabinet

The Poppin White Stow 3-Drawer File Cabinet makes it easy for you to store files, office supplies, and odds and ends with ease, freeing clutter from the worksurface.
